  • Regenerative Farming and Hemp: What Does It Mean?

The hemp market has been a whirlwind for all involved in the industry. With the passing of the U.S. Farm Bill in 2018, which finally decriminalized the hemp plant, the market has seen an absolute explosion, with farmers, manufacturers and other industry members rushing to get in on the sudden increase in demand for hemp-derived products like cannabidiol (CBD). This has been a blessing in many ways, of course. Companies/manufacturers have largely been able to handle the demands of consumers with adequate supply, which all begins with the cultivation of industrial hemp across America’s farmland. But, that doesn’t mean that the hemp farming industry isn’t seeing some challenges. Mainly, there are two issues that can become much bigger problems if they aren’t addressed in the near future: one is the almost inevitable need for farmers to cut corners just to keep up with still-growing demand, and the other is larger-scale environmental issues that impact our ability to grow the highest-quality, cleanest hemp material possible. The good news is that there may be a simple solution that addresses both issues at once, and that’s regenerative farming. What is Regenerative Farming? Regenerative farming is not new, nor does it only relate to the hemp industry. It’s a solution to growing levels of unsustainability and instability within our country’s agricultural industry. A number of issues have developed in the last few decades that threaten the future of our farmers, and in turn, our own. Our soil quality has been degrading over the last several years, mainly due to climate-related issues that have thrown off our entire ecosystem. Increased levels of carbon dioxide emissions have thrown off the nutritional balance of our soil, causing nutritional deficiencies in our crops that can dramatically decrease agricultural yields on a massive scale. On top of that, our weather patterns have become more unstable in recent years, with issues like drought and flooding both contributing to poor agricultural outcomes. Regenerative farming consists of a series of new standards that would make farming more sustainable in the long run. It looks to improve the process of photosynthesis by directly contributing to the quality of soil, and increasing biodiversity to facilitate a more holistic, symbiotic ecosystem in which our crops can thrive. Some of the main principles of regenerative farming include: Limiting Soil Erosion: Disturbing soil ultimately depletes it of carbon dioxide, which is essential to plants so that they may photosynthesize. Over-plowing and tilling also lead to soil compaction, which reduces the soil’s beneficial microbes that support plant growth by keeping the soil rich in nutrients. One of the goals with regenerative farming is to minimize soil erosion and disturbance as much as possible, so that soil can retain higher levels of nutrients and organic matter to support plant growth as much as possible, without the need to use chemicals to compensate. Diversifying Crops: When a piece of farmland grows only one type of crop, the soil changes to accommodate that one crop. What this means is that the soil ends up with excessive amounts of some nutrients, while being extremely deficient in others. Crop diversification ensures that the soil always maintains a balance of nutrients as exposure to different crops keeps nutritional content diverse. Reducing the Use of Synthetic Materials: Chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers all destroy soil’s microbial content over time. Without a diverse host of microbes in the soil, nutrient density will become depleted. The answer? More chemicals to make up the difference. This isn’t a sustainable practice in any way, and besides that, there remain a number of concerns about the quality of our crops that have been exposed to these chemicals over time. Utilizing Livestock: Once upon a time, farmers understood the symbiotic nature between crops and livestock. Livestock feed off of the farmland, while they benefit the plants by naturally aerating the soil and fertilizing it at the same time. Integrating livestock back into the agricultural industry can solve a lot of problems without a high cost. The Unsustainable Nature of Our Current Hemp Market The ‘hemp boom’ we’re seeing has far exceeded our expectations. As a result of increasing demand, hemp farmers have been rushing to yield high amounts of plant material to feed America’s desire for hemp products. The extract-based products that dominate the market, like tinctures, gummies and vape oils, all require large amounts of raw plant material to achieve potent extract concentrations. But, the problem is that farmers can only do so much to boost their annual yields. They’re largely working with nutrient-depleted soil due to the unsustainable farming practices that have become standard throughout the country. What makes things more challenging is that the hemp plant naturally has a high rate of absorption when it comes to surrounding materials in the soil. Chemically treated soils that are high in heavy metals and other toxins damage the quality of the resulting hemp yields, and even introduce these unwanted materials into our bodies. How Will Regenerative Farming Directly Benefit the Hemp Industry? Regenerative farming creates the ideal agricultural environment in which the hemp plant can thrive. And, the hemp industry may be one of the first industries to really integrate these practices on a large scale, because it could very well be the only way to maintain the ability to meet consumer demands. The result is more raw plant material every year, which doesn’t just improve the farming industry, but also reduces costs for consumers. Besides these practices benefiting hemp farmers, there’s another aspect. Farmers who add industrial hemp as an additional crop on their farms can benefit as well. In addition to the benefit of increasing plant diversity, hemp is a natural deterrent to predators that kill pollinators, thus disrupting the ecosystem. Plus, hemp produces some of the highest-quality biomass, which is a nutrient-dense matter that makes its way back into the soil during a plant’s natural life cycle, which can improve the nutrient density of the land as a whole. A Better Future for the Hemp Industry, and for Our Planet Regenerative farming may be the inevitable next step of the hemp industry, and if hemp farmers take the lead, other industries could follow to usher us into an area of more responsible farming on a national, or even global scale. This would mean higher profits for farmers, healthier crops for us, and a more sustainable ecosystem for our future.

  • Getting Your Cannabinoid Dosage Just Right

Whenever it comes time to purchase a new cannabinoid product, we can’t wait to see how it’s going to affect us for the better. There is a lot of excitement to the idea of a new cannabinoid to balance our mood, ease our physical discomfort, or simply make us feel more focused to get through the most demanding parts of our day. But, you can only derive the most positive effects out of a cannabinoid if you’re dosing properly, and each cannabinoid can have its own unique dosing guidelines based on the way in which it absorbs into the body and interacts with our endocannabinoid system. Why is Dosage an Integral Part of Your Hemp Experience? Basically, how much of a cannabinoid you take makes or breaks your session. For one thing, all cannabinoids have a threshold dosage amount – the amount required to actually derive the desired, expected effects. Besides that, taking too much of a cannabinoid, especially one that’s psychoactive, can give you stronger effects than you bargained for. Let’s quickly make one thing clear: cannabinoids are non-toxic to the human body. In other words, even a high dosage amount is not going to be putting you at risk of toxicity. But, too much of a cannabinoid can make you feel groggy, and if it’s a psychoactive cannabinoid-like delta-8 THC, THC-O, or THC-P, you can get too high, which can cause feelings of discomfort and anxiety, as well as impairment that can get in the way of your ability to drive, work, etc. Also, we want to mention that all hemp-based products should come with directions on the label, which may offer more specific dosing instructions. Since each manufacturer knows their product well, it’s always best to follow these instructions. If you have specific needs with a cannabinoid, such as trying to address an ailment with CBD, then you should speak to your doctor for more personalized guidance. Dosing CBD Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, so even high doses of it won’t get you high. But, you do want to be aware of your dosing, in order to get the full extent of its positive effects. And, taking too little CBD will end up being unable to give you the effects that you’re looking for. Edibles CBD edibles are easy to dose since each serving contains an equal amount of cannabidiol according to the milligram. The package should also tell you how much CBD is in each piece. A standard edible dosage for CBD is 10-40mg per serving, with: 10mg being a good amount for someone who is a beginner to CBD and wants to err on the side of caution. 40mg being ideal for a more moderate user who wants stronger effects with each dose. Flower Flower refers to raw hemp flower, which is 100% hemp - no milligram amount to determine per dosage. Flower is usually smoked or vaporized, and the recommended amount is 1-3 puffs for beginners, although people can tolerate more than that without any real risk of ill effects. Vapes Like flower, vape oils that are found in vape cartridges and disposable devices usually contain 100% pure hemp extract, undiluted. So again, we base the dosage amount on the number of puffs, which follows the same rule as flower: 1-3 puffs for a beginner, or more if the user wants a stronger CBD experience. Dosing CBG Cannabigerol (CBG) is another non-psychoactive cannabinoid that’s commonly used for its potential anti-inflammatory properties. CBG is a cannabinoid that acts as the precursor to cannabidiol, converting partially into CBD once the plant has fully matured. Because of the similarities between the two cannabinoids, the dosing instructions are the same as those of its counterpart. Edibles CBG edibles, like gummies, usually come in 10-40mg per piece, and this is considered the standard dosage amount, just as it is with CBD. Flower CBG flower is not actually infused flower – instead, it’s hemp flower that was picked before the cannabigerol converted into cannabidiol, as this means that it has high levels of cannabigerol. It’s vaped or smoked just like CBD flower, and 1 to 3 puffs is considered a good starting amount, with higher amounts being tolerated just fine. Vapes CBG vapes, like CBD vapes, come in both cartridge and disposable form, and they contain a 100% pure hemp formula. 1-3 puffs is a good starting amount, and the user can build up their dosage if they so desire. Dosing THC-P Now, let’s move on to something psychoactive, starting with the most psychoactive cannabinoid in the hemp plant. Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P) is a powerfully intoxicating cannabinoid that’s about 10x more psychoactive than delta-9 THC. Needless to say, you will need to be a little more mindful when choosing a dosage amount for this cannabinoid, due to potentially not being prepared for THC-P’s strong physical and cerebral high. Even if you’ve experienced with other psychoactive cannabinoids, you should start with the lowest recommended amount as THC-P is just that much stronger. Edibles THC-P gummies and other edibles will likely come in lower milligram strength options than those that contain CBD, CBG, and delta-8, since the effects are a lot stronger. We recommend that beginners start with a 2-5mg THC-P gummy if they’re new to the cannabinoid. You may find up to 25mg THC-P gummies on the market for those who have a high tolerance. Flower THC-P flower is raw CBD flower infused with tetrahydrocannabiphorol extract. The THC-P amount can vary depending on how much the company has infused into their flower buds. But, a single puff is best for a beginner, and 1-3 puffs is considered a standard dosage. Vapes The same thing goes for vaping products made with tetrahydrocannabiphorol. Good starting point is a single puff, just to get a feel for THC-P’s effects in a way that’s better manageable. Like the rest of the delivery methods covered so far, 1-3 puffs is a standard dosage amount. Dosing THC-O Then, we have THC-O-acetate (THC-O), another powerful psychoactive cannabinoid. While THC-P is about 10x as potent as delta-9 THC, THC-O is 3x as potent. But, don’t let that fool you – THC-O is still incredibly strong, so be just as cautious when dosing with it, to avoid getting ‘more high’ than you were prepared for. Edibles THC-O edibles usually come in anywhere from 5-25mg per piece. And, 5mg is a great place to start as a beginner, but you can work your way up to a higher amount as your tolerance develops. Flower THC-O flower is made just like THC-P flower, by infusing raw hemp buds with THC-O-acetate extract. Again, a single puff is a good start as a newbie, with 1-3 puffs being standard. Vapes For THC-O vapes, 1-3 puffs are, again, the standard dosage amount, with beginners likely doing best with a single puff to get an idea of how the cannabinoid feels before committing to a strongly intoxicating experience. Bottom Line: Dose Properly for the Best Hemp Experience Possible The cannabinoids of the hemp plant can improve our daily lives and experiences, but only if we make an effort to take them as they’re meant to be taken. Each cannabinoid is unique, and you’ll need to make sure that you dose according to existing guidelines to reap the full rewards of what it can offer to the mind & body.

It offers a nice balance between feelings of euphoria and inner bliss and can even cause a sort of hazy state of mind that’s great if you’re trying to unwind and let go of the proverbial baggage that you have been carrying around. • Terpene Profiles: the Power of Nose

In 2007 I attended a Lavender festival in Fairfield Pennsylvania. Everything Lavender. There was even a Lavender Bonsai making class! What is Lavenders calling grace? Lavenders unique aroma. Lavender is a giant in the aromatherapy space. Known for its ability to calm ragged nerves, soothe anxiety and promote restful sleep. It is possible to ingest Lavender, but it’s mainly known for its special fragrance. Aromas can arouse or arrest. They can provoke or in some cases cause a person to pass out. Smells and flavors can add dynamics to everyday life. Consider what the website Science had to say about the capabilities of the nose: “Understanding how people process the complex information contained in scents-or memories of smells-offers a window into how the human brain functions.” I personally suffer with debilitating nausea. There isn’t a day that goes by without me gagging and dry heaving. Fortunately, the days where I do toss my cookies are few and far between. The cookies usually stay “in the cookie jar”. Part of this is due to Cannabis Terpenes. In the moment when my nausea becomes too difficult to bear (mouth starts to water, stomach cramps up and I start sweating) I have started a mental exercise whereby I visualize a Marijuana Farm and imagine the smell. I also fantasize about smelling my favorite daytime Cannabis. In an emergency, this simple exercise is enough to stave off a vomiting session. This little exercise illustrates the way Cannabis terpenes can hold promise in the treatment of disease. Knowledge We don’t know it all. In fact, what we DO know leads us to believe there is much more to learn. We know that these flavors and smells are locked up in terpenoids. These terpenoids are released when a flower is agitated. Squeezing a resinous flower and at the same time inhaling is a great way to “sniff test” your medicine. A Few Terps A-Pinene: An anti-inflammatory-Bronchodilator-Memory-Anti-Bacterial (Found in Pine) Linalool: Anesthetic-Anti Anxiety-Sedative Myrcene: Anti-Inflammatory-tranquilizing-muscle relaxant Limonene: Mood enhancing, anti-depressant, relieves nausea Terpenes Attract Some states allow Cannabis to be viewed in large dispensary jars. Budtenders bring these large mason jars to perceptive patients to inspect and examine. As cannabis grows become more technically advanced, the smells and new flavors is equally exciting. Cotton candy, cheese, musk, lime, lemon, grape or blueberry, the list is simply endless. *Tip Try this: Next time you are able to smell test your medicine attempt to notice which smell makes you calm. Which smell increases your appetite or which smell gives energy. Ask questions! Botanically Derived Terpenes vs Cannabis Derived Terpenes Some Cannabis manufactures have begun to” reintroduce” complex terpenes back into distillated Cannabis products. Some of them ARE from Cannabis. Top Shelf Hemp only uses naturally sourced Cannabis Derived Terpenes. Cannabis Derived Terpenes: hereafter referred to as CDT are pulled directly from the Cannabis plant and Botanically Derived Terpenes, hereafter referred to as BDT are pulled from naturally sourced “non-Cannabis” flowers. Health departments have become concerned w the state of flavoring in Cannabis products. The Pa health department took the historic step of recalling products with BDT. They cited the FDA as the government agency that “sets the standard” regarding inhalants. What does the future hold for BDTs is hard to say… I am quite sure that Cannabis-derived terpenes have not seen the end. For Cannabis terpenes this is probably just the beginning. • What is Hemp-Derived ∆9 THC?

“This multi-agency campaign conducted operations in 29 counties, arresting 140 individuals and seizing 174 weapons.” -NORML There was a time when Hemp was “pot”. At least in the eyes of the law. Agricultural Hemp’s CAMP “cramp” is the true reason for governments' history of animosity with Hemp. C.A.M.P is a coordinated, government approach to destroy Marijuana plants. Technically known as a campaign against Marijuana Planting. In 2020 the DEA seized 3,740,368 Cannabis plants. Most of the Cannabis is seized because it was sighted during aerial CAMP patrol. Take for example rapper Cypress Hill Lyrics: “And if you're afraid of those pesky pork choppers in the sky No worries, we'll fix them too with one of our Dr. Greenthumb ' Sizzlean' screens to block the nosy pig's vision” Industrial Hemp and Cannabis grown for Delta 9 consumption are different. To the layman, they look the same. CAMP’S ‘cramp”, so to speak, was accurate identification of the plant used for the schedule one drug named “Marijuana”. The DEA opined that they couldn’t eradicate Marijuana effectively if Hemp was legalized. Industrial Hemp is Legalized In 2018 the agriculture Improvement Act authorized HEMP production at the federal level. This law is known colloquially as the “farm bill”. Needless to say, a law that allowed Hemp to be grown outdoors would make CAMP’s Cannabis identification significantly more frustrating. Industrial Hemp is identified by a Certificate of Authenticity validating that the plant contains no more than .30% Delta 9 THC. CAMP enforcers aren’t flying around with microscopes and test kits, so law enforcement needed a new approach. Delta 9 THC is found in the HEMP Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol is present in HEMP grown for agriculture. Delta 9 THC is much, much less abundant in agricultural Hemp. Historically, Hemp wasn’t even grown for trichomes (the little medicine-filled glands on Cannabis). Hemp was sold as rope, feed, or paper. The spring-loaded industry became consumed with the versatility of the plant. The fact that THC still existed in “legal” industrial Hemp plants created an opportunity. Since Delta 9 THC is illegal when extracted from illegal Cannabis plants. Delta 9 THC could be extracted from Legally grown Hemp plants! Similarities & Differences Delta 9 THC that is extracted from industrial Hemp plants “feels” exactly the same to the user as illegal Delta 9. The difference between Legal, over the counter Delta 9, and illegal Delta 9 is mostly Semantics. The truth is that production of Cannabis has morphed into a space where some of the Cannabis on the market “used as” Marijuana isn’t technically Marijuana in the eyes of the law. Even potent Dispensary flower can fetch “over the counter” legality when the Delta 9 Content remains THCA. Semantics allow products "used as” Marijuana to be Federally categorized as industrial Hemp. Whoa… Yeah you read that right. Semantics is defined as the meaning of words and language. The language used to legalize industrial Hemp has a “technical” bearing on the legality of Delta 9 THC found in an edible product. The law states: the term “hemp” means the plant species Cannabis sativa L. and any part of that plant, including the seeds thereof and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis. Since Hemp’s legal designation for THC is less than .30% that means an edible with less than .30% THC would be categorized as industrial Hemp. Legal THC can only be found in a very specific amount that honors the language of current Federal Law. Duty Calls The thing about uncle Sam is this: The government makes every effort to close loopholes and avoid technicalities. Do your duty! You can END UP IN a whole lot of dookie! The laws surrounding Cannabis, Marijuana, Marihuana, and Hemp are in an ongoing state of flux. To keep yourself and your Ganja out of jail it's important to have some sense of the Cannabis laws in your area. • What's The Difference Between Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC?

Delta 8 is not almost Delta 9 “So, yesterday, Dwight found a half a joint in the parking lot. Which is unfortunate because Dwight finding drugs is more dangerous than most people using drugs. Let’s go over some of the symptoms of Marijuana use, shall we? You tell me who this sounds like…Dull. Slow-moving, constantly snacking.” Comical, amusing. Some of my favorite moments on tv are Marijuana moments! Marijuana moments are VERY funny! In all seriousness, though the things we used to believe about the components of Marijuana are no longer true. This episode of the cult series “the office” highlights common prejudices that, in today’s environment, are no longer useful. The fact is, Cannabis is a moving target, expanding its reach daily! Cannabis will never be the same & that includes Hemp. Electric cars, solar panels, and other alternative energy are all the evolution of modern life. Cannabinoids like Delta 9 THC have now met a similar brand of disruptive tech. When I first used Marijuana, I remember exhaling through a personal charcoal filter to protect privacy. My concerns have “expired” when weighed against the use of cartridge technology that has little, to no smell. Once a brand-new technology Cartridges are now precise, discreet, and reliable. In the past, if I wanted an edible, I preferred to cook at night to protect my privacy. Today gummies, tinctures, patches, and even suppositories make private Cannabis use possible. Change is good. Patients no longer risk life & limb to gain access to Cannabis. Today, high-quality Cannabis could be delivered directly to your front door. No longer a joint between friends, choices are overwhelming. Everyone wants to feel good. We are here to help. Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol Tetrahydrocannabinol is the proper name for THC. Historically. Delta 9 THC is inextricably linked to the name Marijuana. The writer of the cult series “the office’ had in mind Marijuana that was used for its Delta 9 THC. Delta 9 THC has been the ONLY link to “what” in Cannabis makes us feel so good. Until now! Cannabinoids like CBD or Delta 8 THC are now colloquially referred to as Cannabis. In fact, Delta 9 is just one of over a 100 Cannabinoids. The Science +1-1 Delta 9 looks very similar to Delta 8 at the atomic level. Delta 9 is bonded twice on the 9th atom. Delta 8 THC is bonded twice at the eighth atom. Delta 8 THC is found in nature but in lower concentrations than Delta 9 THC. Because Delta 8 THC is only found in small quantities, Delta 8 must be extracted from legally grown industrial hemp. Delta 8 is extracted as a naturally occurring component of Cannabis. Delta 9 THC Therapy Delta 9 THC has many health benefits! Those benefits are being clarified as new research becomes available. In addition to some of the pleasures of delta 9 consumption, there are also a few disadvantages. The Delta 9 we love, can occasionally cause anxiety, sleeplessness, or irritability. Delta 9 meant jail time Delta 9 THC has been crucified, beat up, chewed on, and spit out by the planet's judiciary system. In the wake of tremendous reform, delta 9 containing products are sold legally to most adults with proof of a serious medical condition. Applications for these programs can be costly and time-consuming. Recently online distributors began selling legal delta 9 products. These products can be purchased legally because the molecule was derived from legally grown Hemp and fits the “dry weight” language of the law. *Delta 9 THC intoxication is considered illegal when operating a motor vehicle or firearm. Delta 8 Tetrahydrocannabinol Dwight was not talking about delta 8 when he discovered half a joint at the office. Why? Because he knew nothing about it! Delta 8 THC is a relatively new Cannabinoid! I recently interviewed a patient about the differences between delta 8 and 9. She explained: “Delta 9 makes me sleepy, knocks me out. I can’t drive with either delta 8 or delta 9 because I feel weird. Delta 8 does help me work, helps me work.” Delta 8 THC has been described as a “working high”. Delta 8 THC performs well for patients living with quality-of-life impairments. Delta 8 provokes CB1 receptors and delivers relief to those living with severe nervous system damage that does not abate with conventional therapy. Delta 8 can also be soothing to digestion and provide relief from chronic nausea. Delta 9 THC can at times produce anxiety or paranoia. Delta 8 doesn’t appear to carry any of these negative side effects. This makes Delta 8 an ideal candidate for entourage. “Entourage” is a way of describing the mixed-use of Cannabinoids. Entourage can be team “U” I like to name my glass, homemade tinctures, and any other homemade mix. Opiates can have serious complications when combined with other drugs. Cannabis is much, much different! Cannabis performs alone, or together so there is no need to “choose one and run” so to speak. Entourage is a philosophy where the patient combines Cannabinoids, or even Cannabis strains to find his/her own path. *Delta 8 intoxication may not be explicitly written into local laws. Intoxication from lawful substances is considered illegal when combined with the operation of a motor vehicle or the use of a firearm. Legality Be wise, use your eyes! Cannabis can feel good, GOOD, GOOD! Intoxicating Cannabinoids have the potential to attract costly legal burdens. Simple Google queries that include the Cannabinoid you are considering purchasing plus the area you live in can provide a wise education on local law enforcement. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. • What is THC-O?

At Top Shelf Hemp Co. educating our customers is a large part of our mission. THC-O is next on the chopping block. Let's take a closer look at what exactly THC-O is. A Quick History THC-O was discovered by the US Military at some point between 1948 and 1975, during the Edgewood Arsenal Experiments. In 1974, author D. Gold published instructions for the synthesis of THC-O. He noted that the effect of THC-O was more psychedelic and spiritual than ∆9 THC, and 2-3 times more potent. It only took 4 years before THC-O was on the DEA's radar and was considered for addition to the Controlled Substance Analog Act, but was dropped as it appeared to be an isolated incident. Is THC-O Legal? Hemp-derived THC-O is federally legal thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. 12 states currently ban THC-O. The Science THC-O, also known as THC-O Acetate, is a metabolic prodrug. This means that the body breaks it down into its pharmacologically active component. This is why there is a delay in experiencing the effects of THC-O. This cannabinoid is striking in terms of its potency, which is around 3 times as psychoactive as ∆9 THC. THC-O is nicknamed “the spiritual cannabinoid” for a reason. Unlike any other cannabinoid in cannabis, including both marijuana and hemp, THC-O-acetate produces a psychedelic experience, almost more similar to the intoxication associated with psilocybin. How is THC-O Different from Marijuana? THC-O is up to 3 times more potent than ∆9 THC. It offers a unique experience. Anecdotal evidence suggests that its potential for healing is on par with ∆9 THC, however, research is limited. Increased potency means the need for smaller doses. Because of how it's metabolized there is a 20-30 minute period before the full effect is achieved. Wrap Up THC-O was discovered sometime in the last 80 years years ago. There's not a lot of research on THC-O just yet, though things are looking promising. It's 3 times as potent as ∆9 THC, and offers a unique psychedelic effect. It's advisable to check your local and state law for any new developments. • What is THC-P?

At Top Shelf Hemp Co. educating our customers is a large part of our mission. THC-P is a new buzzword. Let's take a closer look at what exactly THC-P is. A Quick History Scientists funded by the UNIHEMP research project discovered THC-P in 2019. Because of cannabis' status as a Schedule 1 controlled substance in the US, the study of THC-P is difficult. The majority of research on THC-P takes place abroad. Studies are underway in Isreal and Canada, however, most of what we have learned about THC-P comes out of Europe where funding for this kind of research is much more commonplace. A multi-disciplinary team of Italian scientists is responsible for the discovery of this novel cannabinoid, headed by Guiseppe Cannazza of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Their findings were published in late 2019 in the journal Nature. How is THC-P Different from Marijuana? Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabiphorol or THC-P is found naturally in trace amounts in cannabis. Its effects are similar to that of ∆9 THC only magnified. As previously mentioned, A smaller dose of THC-P yields the same results. This includes both positive and negative effects on the endocannabinoid system. Is THC-P Legal? THC-P is available across the United States. At the state level, its legal status is contingent. Every state has its own laws and regulations regarding alternative cannabinoids. In the past the federal government's position on alternate cannabinoids has been confusing, placing CBD and marijuana in the same category of drugs. With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, the federal government legalized hemp-derived cannabinoid products as long as products maintain less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC. Delta 9 THC is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. It’s recommended you check state laws before purchasing THC-P in your state. The Science THC-P or (-)-Trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabiphorol (Δ9-THCP, (C7)-Δ9-THC, and THC-Heptyl), is a potent phytocannabinoid. It readily binds with CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. It is structurally similar to ∆9 THC. The major difference is a heptyl side chain rather than pentyl side chain. To help visualize the difference, think of it as having a longer tail than ∆9 THC. It's theorized that this is the key difference as to why THC-P has as much as a 30x higher affinity for binding to receptors when compared to ∆9 THC. This is where the claim that THC-P is around 30x more potent than ∆9 THC originates. Since its discovery, scientists have also discovered CBD-P and ∆8 THC-P(JWH-091). Not much is known yet about these compounds other than CBD-P also occurs naturally and ∆8 THC-P is considered synthetic at this time.* Wrap Up THC-P has a short history. Consuming THC-P certainly has its benefits. It's advisable to check your local and state law for any new developments. • What is HHC?

At Top Shelf Hemp Co. educating our customers is a large part of our mission. HHC is on the radar today. Let's take a closer look at what exactly HHC is. A Quick History HHC or Hexahydrocannabinol is what's called a hydrogenated derivative of ∆9 THC. HHC was first synthesized in 1947. Roger Adams used natural ∆9 THC found in Cannabis sativa in the process. Since its discovery, HHC has been synthesized from several different chemical compounds. In 2020, the de Las Heras group discovered HHC is a naturally forming cannabinoid, if exceedingly rare. Since it is a naturally occurring compound in Cannabis sativa, humans have been ingesting trace amounts of HHC for hundreds of years. Is HHC Legal? HHC offers more legal promise and appeal than its counterpart ∆8 THC for several reasons. First and foremost, it's not a THC compound. According to the 2018 Farm Bill, as long as HHC is derived from hemp, it's considered legal. It may also elude drug tests, more research is needed into this claim though. 12 states currently ban HHC. The Science HHC is a rare phytocannabinoid, found in extremely rare cases in nature. HHC can be synthesized from other similar chemical compounds including citronellal and olivetol. HHC is typically made from CBD. There are no double bonds in the cyclohexyl ring of HHC. Hydrogen molecules have been added to the compound. HHC has been shown to bind with CB1 receptors. Its bond has a much weaker affinity than ∆9 THC. This is typically an indication that it is not as intoxicating. How is HHC Different from Marijuana? Because of its weak affinity with CB1 receptors, HHC has a more mild impact on the endocannabinoid system when compared to ∆9 THC. Its effect is similar to ∆8 THC with a decreased sedative effect. The inclusion of hydrogen stabilizes the HHC compound increasing its shelf life. Wrap Up HHC was discovered almost 100 years ago. Humans have been consuming HHC in trace amounts for centuries. It has relatively mild effects when compared to ∆9 THC. It's advisable to check your local and state law for any new developments. Continue educating yourself on cannabinoids, and check out www.topshelfhemp.co when you're ready for a more first-hand experience. *Top Shelf Hemp Co. makes no health claims about cannabinoids.
